Concentration

Philosophy Major Concentration in Ethics and Civic Life

The Department of Philosophy's optional philosophy major concentration in ethics and civic life is an opportunity for philosophy majors who are interested in ethics and community service to relate their experiences in the classroom to their work in the community, and vice versa. Students who complete the requirements for the concentration will receive acknowledgement on their transcripts of their accomplishments in this concentration. Such recognition will not only honor the student and enhance his or her ability to secure responsible employment but will also affirm the Department's commitment to the education of students for meaningful roles in social and civic engagements.

Requirements

Students may fulfill the requirements for the concentration by completing three of the following approved courses and a community service component:

  • 3602 Science, Technology, and Society
  • 4324 Ethics and Education
  • 4325 Education and Social Change
  • 4326 Lives Worth Living
  • 4414 Political Philosophy
  • 4622W Philosophy and Feminist Theory

How to Enroll

Philosophy majors who are interested in the concentration in ethics and civic life should obtain a copy of the enrollment form from the Department of Philosophy main office, 831 Heller Hall, or from Valerie Tiberius, the Director of Undergraduate Studies. The white copy of the form should be returned to the academic advising office (122 Johnston Hall) and the yellow copy to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. The forms must be completed after you declare your major in philosophy and at least one semester prior to your graduation. Students should keep the pink copy of the form.
